The CoQuS Programme
The Vienna Graduate Program on Complex Quantum Systems (CoQuS) provides graduate education dominantly through intense research training and through advanced courses in one of the most active fields of modern physics.
In particular in recent years, many new ideas for future quantum technologies could already be demonstrated in the lab.The Vienna doctoral program on Complex Quantum Systems offers PhD research and training opportunities in the following fields:
- Fundamental tests of physics
- Quantum information concepts and implementations
- Matter wave interferometry: foundations and applications
- Quantum technology on the nanoscale
- Quantum physics in the solid state
- Cold quantum gases & atom chips
- Entanglement of massive particles
- Hybrid quantum systems
- Strongly correlated quantum systems
- Quantum effects in biological systems
- Nuclear quantum clock
- Optical Quantum Computing
The program provides the opportunity for highly gifted students to obtain a broad and interdisciplinary education in many of these fields and to prove themselves in cutting edge research.
The following faculty members will serve as thesis supervisors:
- Prof. Markus Arndt, University of Vienna
- Prof. Markus Aspelmeyer, University of Vienna
- Prof. Caslav Brukner, University of Vienna
- Prof. Arno Rauschenbeutel, Vienna University of Technology
- Prof. Jörg Schmiedmayer, Vienna University of Technology
- Prof. Karl Unterrainer, Vienna University of Technology
- Prof. Frank Verstraete, University of Vienna
- Prof. Anton Zeilinger, University of Vienna
Associated members:
- Prof. Reinhold Bertlmann, University of Vienna
- Prof. Helmut Rauch, Vienna University of Technology
- Prof. Thorsten Schumm, Vienna University of Technology
- Dr. Alipasha Vaziri, University of Vienna
- Dr. Philip Walther, University of Vienna
- Prof. Peter Zoller, University of Innsbruck
The doctoral program is closely linked to several FWF funded and ERC excellence programs, to the Austrian Academy Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI), to several European networks and many international collaboration projects.
We seek to increase the percentage of women in physics. The CoQuS faculty therefore explicitly encourages qualified female students to apply.
Employment Details
The Vienna graduate program provides financial support for up to three years. Doctoral students admitted to the CoQuS program will have a regular employment at their hosting University.
The employment includes:
- A gross salary of about 1877 €/month (this incl. tax & health benefits)
- A tuition waiver
The graduate program will also provide support for
- Travel to scientific work shops, schools and conferences
- Exchange program to partner universities
- Soft skill trainings & language courses
The number of places in this excellence program is limited. The faculty members will select new students according to their academic excellence, scientific achievements and expected potential for future research.
